People throw roasted beans around their houses in order to chase away evil sprits from their houses. Afterwards they eat same number of beans as their age. In Setsubun festival at temples and shrine you can see Sumo wrestlers or entertainers throw roasted beans shouting "Oni wa soto ! Fukuwa Uchi!" to the people. 1.
