Jazz Club Overseas Part 2 I attended the lecture on DUKE ELLINGTON held at Mr. Terai's Club from 12:00 to 15:00 on. May 29. I would like to introduce Mr. Terai just for your information Mr. Terai is only apprentice of Tommy Flanagan's and Jazz Pianist and the owner of Jazz Club "Over Seas". I went his live concert and "Sunset and the mockingbird" was very impressive number. Mr. Terai taught me that Duke Ellington wrote this number. Since then I has been interested in Ellington and I attended to this lecture. The lecture was made by Mr. Terai but his pupils organized and prepared it. It is convenient for housewife like me to attend daytime lecture held at nice location. |

When I opened the heavy double door of his club, I found his young pupils at the reception desk. Tamae, who is Mr. Terai's wife welcomed me. Mr. Terai seemed to be tensed up little. She guided me to my seat. There were handwritten documents on the table which he prepared by himself. I had coffee and sandwich because I arrived 30 minutes earlier. I saw some people drinking beer. Mr. Terai stared at his pupils who took their seat at 12:00 on time and repoached them for being late. "At Fulanagan's concert, the members arrived one hour to 15 minutes earlier than the opening time. It is rude of you to be late!." he said. |

Most of you may know the career of Duke Ellington, however, Billy Strayhorn is not so famous who collaborated with Duke as the right-hand man . He was loved by his mother so much and he was outstanding in pianist and arranger in his high school days. He composed 'Take The "A" Train' which is the theme music of Ellington band. Previous theme music was "Sepia Panorama" by Ellington . (The photo of jacket is quoted from past database "Duke Ellington") |
|
B. Strayhorn met D. Ellington in 1938. Ellington asked Strayhorn to play the piano at dressing room and he played "Sophisticated Lady" by imitating Ellington's way. Then he reharmonized it with different key and faster tempo and made his own performance. Ellington was surprised at his great talent and gave him a job. He promised him to contact later and returned to NY. Strayhorn did not get any contact from Ellington . He borrowed the money to get a train and visited him, but he could not see him. This experience led him to compose 'Take The "A" Train'. It is interesting to know many episodes and they make me listen to music more seriously. |

Mr. Terai described the episode about Ellington and Strayhorn and showed the note by slide and played the original sound in his lecture. His pupils took note and small recorder because they were under training. First we listened to "The Mooch", then Take The "A" Train, "Sunset And The Mockinbird". He praised Johnny Hodges(as) so much. Talented Jazz artist as follows are necessary for Jungle sound by Ellington: Paul Gonsalves(ts), Harry Carney(bs), Johnny Hodges(as), Jimmy Hamilton(tcl), Russell Procope(as,cl),etc. I really enjoyed to listen to wonderful music with large volume and excellent condition. |

At the end of his lecture Mr. Terai said " Music effects politics and economy. I want you to study the background of the music.". It is very important matter and I agree with him. In my opinion , cry for sorrow and poverty in discrimination created Gospel song and formed Jazz on the basis of Blues. It might be difficult for Japanese to understand racial and religious discrimination. I had a question "Why are white people superior to black people?" when I was a child. I have sensibility for difference of status value since then. |
