Kaitai Shinsho vol.13 DENON MC cartridge DL-103 Description Kenji Kondo and Hiroyuki Satake, photography Hiroyuki Satake. In this Kaitai Shinsho we follow last time and the time-tested product of MC cartridge of demolition of MC cartridge. It is DL-103 of DENON. (Satake) Although I do not use the analog record now, I save it carefully now, because I was the regular user of cartridge DENON DL-103. It is finished strongly; it is not the especially excellent sound quality. However, even if we listen to the music of every genre, It has the merit that is always stabilized to hear it. (Kondo) |

It is a label side. (Satake) |
This is the front side. As for this 103, the needle has broken. (Satake) |
It is a terminal side. (Satake) |
See from width. (Satake) |
The needle has broken. (Satake) Although the proper pressure of DL-103 was 2.5g, PUC-7D (that was past) was 6g. (Kondo) |
If we open a cover, it is like this. If pliers insert and pull, it will separate from a cover. It seems that four places were stopped with the bond. (Satake) |
The inside is like this. We do not find so much difference with MC20 at last time. (Satake) |
As for the part of the shape of an egg roll behind the takeoff lever which we can usually see from the case, something like thin tracing paper was attached. (Satake) |
It is a terminal side. The very thin coil has appeared in the point of the solder of a terminal. (Satake) |
It is like this when we see from before. (Satake) |
If we see from left-hand side, it is like this. Although the angle attached MC20 [last time] to the magnet, the angle attaches 103 to the front yoke. (Satake) |
It is the pole piece, a damper, a coil, and a takeoff lever. (Satake) |
It is the up photo from the bottom. We can remove the screw in the takeoff lever side of pole piece. And can remove a takeoff lever. (Satake) |
It is the place which removed the front yoke. The magnet and the front yoke had stopped with adhesives. If I imposed power for a while, it will separate simply. (Satake) |
It is expansion of a coil. The coil is wound around the griddle of a cross. Although it looks greatly with a photograph, since right "stick" is the thickness of a takeoff lever, it is quite small. (Satake) |
If I see from the front, I can see the form of a cross clearly. (Satake) It is easy to use output voltage because it is 0.3mV. (Kondo) |
From front. (Satake) |
If I remove a takeoff lever, it will be like this. (Satake) |
Removed the damper. (Satake) |
It is expansion of a takeoff lever. A golden part is included in pole piece. (Satake) |
It is expansion of a coil. The thin line is coiled finely without a crevice. (Satake) |
It is the coil see from the reverse side. (Satake) |
It is like this if I remove the pole piece. Pole piece has adhered to the rear yoke with adhesives. (Satake) |
It is only the magnet if I remove pole piece and a takeoff lever. Once the copper wire which came out of the coil is stopped to per middle of a permanent magnet with adhesives, it is in the direction wall of a terminal. (Satake) |
It is scattering. Since the rear yoke and the magnet are only pasted up lightly, I can take easily. The right is a front, the left is rear. (Satake) |
It is like this when all parts other than the needle point are put in order. There are quite few parts. From the upper left. The bottom of housing, a housing top, a takeoff lever + coil, a permanent magnet. Lower left. A rear yoke, a front yoke. A thing like the beans of middle. The screw of pole piece. That green is a damper, pole piece. (Satake) |

It was demolition of MC cartridge continuously twice. When I compared DENON DL-103 with ortofon MC20, there was no great difference at a part or structure. since I do not listened to the sound and I do not actually compare, I do not understand, but probably, sound is considerably different even if contents are almost the same. There are also few parts. Structure was almost the same. However, sound is different. It will be so delicate that it is large in sound that how to coil the copper wire used for a coil is also different for a while and influence comes out. I think that it becomes what has the difference quite important for sound probably in a material etc. I think that it is exact. I thought that building a good cartridge was probably the thing like the world of a tsume shogi. (Satake) The stereo cartridge of DENON was what succeeds the flow of PUC-7D adopted as NHK in 1960. As for PUC-7D, it was a good sound quality, but proper presser was 6g. Now, the bruise of a record is intense. It was demanded to make it light. DL-103 manufactured in 1964 met this demand. Proper presser is 2.5g. A record is not damaged. Since reputation became very good, they decided on general marketing in 1970. The price of 16,000 yen was very expensive at that time. However, it was a charm that the sound of the FM broadcast that was estimated the highest sound quality of that time will their own things. It is really glad that the present new article is also 23,100 yen. Moreover, even now, frequency characteristic data is attached. I think that this is also manifestation of self-confidence as a brand of DENON. Although I think that we can use also with semiconductor head amplifier, or MC transformer, I think it is impossible to input direct to the MM Phono equalizer. As long as a DENON brand continues, I want DL-103 to lengthen a super-long run. (Kondo) |
