CD recommended by Mr. Kondo Overseas/Tommy Flanagan Tommy Flanagan(p), Wilbur Little(b), Elvin Jones(d) Recorded in Stockholm, August 15, 1957 Tommy Flanagan is called a great supporting player with delicate sense. He can make great piano performance when he is playing piano as supportive role. He has been a supporting musician for famous artist like Sony Rollins, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, JJ Johnson, Ella Fitzgerald since he came out at 15(1945). His feature is excellent Jazz and swing sense, skilled touch sense of right hand, talented facility. It can be said that he is a typical hard bap modern Jazz Pianist. He was called "Supporter of Great Album" but there were not so many his leader album released around 1960. |

This album was recorded in Sweden 1957 and it is famous for his first leader album. Elvin Jones performs tasteful brush work. It covers elegant and excellent numbers with up or medium tempo by great piano trio. You can relax to listen to Tommy's skilled piano . He is popular for his sophisticated performance and two leader albums were released in Japan 1975 and 1976. Later several leader albums were released and most of them were elegant and stylish, however, he was not regarded characteristic album in U.S.A. and he did not have a favorable review. Maybe he can make great performance as supporting player. It is very sorry that a great Jazz musician passed away in the person of Tommy Flanagan in 2001. |

Interval between "C" letters covering the jacket of "OVERSEAS" are irregular. According to my imagination, "C" means the characters around Tommy Flanagan. He can keep a distance from the talented musician , so he can be a great supporting player. Hisayuki Terai is a leader of this CD who is only one pupil of Tommy Flanagan. He might be one of the "C" in the jacket. |

CD recommended to Ms. Cappuccino from Ms. Trumpeter Yours truel/Hisayuki Terao Trio Hisayuki Terai(p), Masahiro Munetake(b), Tatsuo Kawahara(ds) Recorded at OverSeas, September 23 & 24 ,2001 This is the first time for me to listen to Mr. Terai's piano performance. His smoothing touch is excellent. He makes unique pedaling accompaniment and its echo produce peculiar atmosphere. Vibration by piano and harmony with bass and drums are interesting. "A Thousand Years Ago" is a moody number and it sounds like Japanese typical pops for me. Mr. Munetake(b) is same generation as I. I would like to hear impressed bass of "I Wished On The Mood" as long as I can. "Someone To Tell It To" might be the main number in this album. He plays it with a bow . Mr. Kawahara has another nickname , "Drunken Drammer". Mr. Kawahara has been playing with Mr. Terai more than 25 years and their partnership is so tight. His great drumming technique with innocent character makes this trio cheerful and hopeful. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is very cool number like tap dance. |

Terai's comment for this album is "What was the happiness for me? This album is the letter explaining by piano where my blue bird was found.". I is snowing heavily when I looks out the window. I didn't notice it because it was blight outside. That's why it is so cold. My elder daughter gets cold and sleeps in bed but my elder son goes out to play outside like puppy. Mr. Terai's piano sound makes me so warm in such cold day and I have a very homely feel with it as if a father plays it at home. This atmosphere is suitable for the snow outside. However, the recording was made in September. It was recorded two weeks later of the tragic accident "9.11" in 2001 when the background of the accident had not revealed yet. "Will You Still Be Mine?" is an ending number and the lyrics of this number gave me goose skin. They sing it happily and cheerfully. Their performance makes me understand their earnest attitude towards love. |
