CD recommended by Mr. KondoIsn't This A Lovely Day/Harry Allen Harry Allen(ts), Hank Jones(p), George Marz(b), Kenny Washington(ds), Recorded in 2004, BVCJ-34030 May fantastic deep sound of tenor last forever! Harry Allen is now very active as tenor saxophonist. Hank Jones's piano and George Mraz's bass make up-tempo performance in this album. Allen is popular in Japan and his unique tenor sound has fascinated a lot of Japanese fan. His feature is nostalgic and resonant performance . He is very talented to play tenor saxophone emotionally as if he sings a song. |

His rich tone is the original sound of Jazz which present tenor saxophonist is losing. I can feel something matured in his play. His performance of slow number like Ben Webster with strong vibrato makes feel us majestic. He is a real saxophonist devote his energies to tone of tenor. Pleasant aftertaste is similarity in good quality. Whenever I listen to the excellent performance by great entertainers in this album , it sounds fresh and romantic and it makes me turn on the switch of the player again . |
Harry Allen/When I grow too old to dreamHarry Allen(ts), Ray Brown(b), Heff Hamilton(ds), Herb Ellis(g) Recorded on December 21 & 22 1999 at Sony Music Studios, Santa Monica Harry Allen performed at Jazz Street Festival in Takatuski, Osaka and I heard his name first in this festival. I was not so interested in Jazz as I am now. However, I had a chance to work for Hi-Fi Do newsletter and it drove me to listen to Jazz. Now I get used to listen to it. I would like to be more enthusiastic about Jazz. |

Starting number, "When I grow too old to dream" is swingy song. Tenor tone is very warm and comfortable , and makes me relaxed. Drums and bass make good combination without piano. "Nagasaki" is up-tempo music and chasing performance of strong tenor and Jeff's drums is exciting . Highlight is drums with powerful kick keeping rhythm steadily. Herb's guitar sound like spice for it. "Here is That Rainy Day" is a fantastic duo number played by Harry(ts) and Ray Brown's(b). "Detour Ahead" is also a duo by Herb(g) and Harry(ts)."Love Waked In" is swingy and drums performance is cool. Various arrangement is interesting in the introduction of "Al The Things You Are" . Harry is a great saxophonist to play various kinds of tone flexibly. |
