CD recommended by Ms. CappuccinoThe Duke Ellington Orchestra/The Queen's Suite" Recorded April 1, 14 ,1959/February 25, 1971/April 27, 1971/ October 5,1972 in NY Duke Ellington met Queen Elizabeth in England in 1958 and he composed "The Queens Suite" with 6 parts later. Music rouses our imagination. Clear piano tone performed by Ellington at the introduction seems to express the journey of the birds. Clarinet by Jimmy Hamilton leads us beautiful and great natural world. I am fascinated with grace and gorgeous melody and it makes me imagine the gorgeous boat in sunset . Horn section produces the atmosphere of the movie "Shall we dance?" . "The Single Pedal of a Rose" consist of piano by Ellington and bass by Jimmy Woode with gentle mood. On the other hand, "Apes and Peacocks" is rhythmical music by drums and wind instruments. |

He composed "The Goutelas Suite" by the emotion which he got when he was invited inauguration of Goutelas castle in France. His first performance of this suite was made at Lincoln Center in NY. Children with torch lined there. Many unusual experiences might contribute to composition. "The Uwis Suite" was composed for Ellington Festival in Wisconsin University in 1972. "Klop" is a pleasant music which children will like. "Loco Madi" excites me with swingy rhythm. I am impressed by his creativity for composition. |

CD recommended by Mr. TeramotoGuest : Ms . Trumpeter Beethoven/Symphony No.3 in E-flat major, Op.55 "Eroica" Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor : Wilhelm Furtwangler I always concentrate to listen to Symphony No.3 by Beethoven. I try to turn my thoughts toward his life and mind. He intended to dedicate Symphony No.3 to Napoleon, however , he got angry to know that Napoleon became French emperor and he rewrote the dedication to "for a certain hero". This anecdote about No.3 is well known. The conductor is Furtwangler who is still in an impregnable position even though he had passed 50 years ago. |

The first movement is grand and almost perfect. The third movement starts with the gallop and gradually elevates the atmosphere of the hero's triumph. The forth movement has various and great scale. I like the second movement of funeral march. A remarkable contrast between fanfare by wind instruments and solemn sound by strings moves us deeply. There are more pathetic expression in his music, but there are also generous , merciful and beautiful melody in the interval. Those alternate melody is performed like the wave and at last the salvation is expressed. Furtwangler's performance makes steadily progress and it makes me imagine the phantasmagoria of death. His performance is magnificent and exciting. |
