A Great Day In Harlem THE LEGACY OF A FAMOUS JAZZ PHOTOGRAPH A Film by JEAN BACH Introductory Narration By:QUINCY JONES Art Blakey,Buck Clayton,Art Farmer,Dizzy Gillespie,Benny Golson,Jonny Griffin,Milt Hinton,Chubby Jackson,Hank Jones,Max Kaminsky,Eddie Locke,Marian McPartland,Gerry Mulligan,Horace Silver,Ernie Wilkins,Sonny Rollins,Scoville Browne "Esquire" Magazine arranged to gather 58 Jazz musicians at harem in NY on August 1958( 57 musicians excluding Willie Smith) . It seemed ridiculous idea because most of Jazz musicians have worked till dawn and they usually sleep around 10 in the morning. However, musicians of golden years gathered one after another . This is the first photograph taken by Art Kane(Photographer) who saw incredible scene with his own eyes . This is an effective picture used in the movie "The Terminal" by Spielberg. |

A producer of "A Great Day In Harlem" is Jean Bach. Based on this photograph she produced this DVD by editing interviews of Jazz musicians by herself. It required excessive amount of procedures to make mosaics. I was excited to see their performance and the scene telling about episode of their friends. Some of them who had interview had already died and this is very valuable film. Funky jazz and bap music were played around 1958 and it is fun to see live scene in those days. Jean Bach's comment on this film is included. Mrs.Tamae Terai of Over Seas saw this ocumentary film 10 years ago and I would like to introduce his comment on it. |

I got a video of "A Great Day In Harlem" 10 years ago. I enjoyed hearing musicians voices. I was most interested in the story of Eddi Lock who was a famous drummer came from Detroit. He came to Over Seas to make performace with Sir Roland Hana. Jean Bach is an intellectual beautiful lady who was a radio producer. She is a famous madam in Jazz society in Greenwich Village. She keeps such great relations with Jazz musicians for long time that she could make an excellent work. She is a friend of Tommy Franagan's wife and I met her with Mr. & Mrs. Franagan in NY and went Jazz Live tour one night. She was frank but elegant lady. She used to be a enthusiastic fan of Duke Ellington and accompanied him during recording. She is an expert in Jazz and she can sing Jazz numbers of Ellington band without any mistake. I think she is now over 80 years old. I heard that she feel grief because her close friend Bobby Short died recently. |

DVD recommended by Ms. Cappuccino The Terminal(a set of two DVD) Writing credits : Sacha Gervasi & Jeff Nathanson Director : Steven Spielberg Cast: Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta –Jones, and others This week I recommend DVD instead of CD. What is your main point in selecting movies to watch? Your favorite actor, director, writer or music? There are genre such as human drama, comedy, romance, etc. The scene of "The Terminal" is airport terminal. It is my favorite movie that meets all condition to select movies. My favorite actor , Tom Hanks, plays Victor Navorski whose homeland is Krakozhia in Eastern Europe. He arrived at JFK airport in NY but he found that his nation was vanished because of coup d'etat. It means his passport are no longer valid and of course he is denied entrance to the U.S. |

He spent there for several months and he understand U.S.A. gradually through many experiences. NY is melting pot that consist of many races. He makes friends and is attracted to a flight attendant, Amelia, who was played by Catherine Zeta –Jones . He has trouble with her but their similality is "Waiting". Victor waits there for several months because of a promise to his father. His father likes Jazz and he had waited for Autograph of Jazz Men for 40 years. However, he died before he got Benny Golson's autograph who is a famous saxophonist. It is enjoyable to see Tom Hanks's comical performance. I like the scene that he paints listening Jazz. It is fun that he speaks English with accent. I think he is very charming man. The script of this movie is also fascinating because it focus on the airport terminal which is only passing point. |

Victor shows one picture in important scene where he tells the reason why he came to NY. This is 57 Jazz Men's picture of "A Great Day In Harlem". Making video is also interesting which shows importance of the backstage staff. Airport terminal is real terminal, not film set. It is designed technologically. Supporting actors are so nice and their performance is impressive. |
