Beautiful cymbal sound by Philly Joe Jones is recorded clearly in this CD. He rejoined Evans Trio in 1978. Michael Moore(b) knew all numbers of Evans trio and made a great bass performance in "How My Heart Sings". The feature of this album is lively drumming through all numbers that makes trio performance more exciting. It is rare live concert by both Bill Evans and Philly Joe Jones. As to sound quality, energetic and heavy piano sound and deep bass are fascinating. |
CD recommended by Ms. CappuccinoThad Jones & Mel Lewis / Live At The Village Vanguard '67 4.28. at the Village Vanguard NY City Thad Jones(cor), Snooky Young Bill Verry Jimmy Nottingham Richard Williams Marvin Stamm: (tp), Bob Brookmeyer , Tom McIntosh, Garnett Brown: (tb), Cliff Heather (btb), Jerome Richardson (sp& al sax, fl, cl) Petter Adams(var. sax.cl), Roland Hanna(p), Sam Herman(g, shaker), Richard Davis(b), Mel Lewis(ds) Thad Jones conducts big band orchestra organized by 19 musicians. Thad Jones comes from Michigan and he organized music band with Hunk Jones(P), Elvin Jones(ds) in Detroit in late 30's. He is famous as trumpeter but he played cornet in this band. He is an all –round musician who can play flugelhorn and compose music. By the way, I heard that Duke Ellington likes music composed by Thad Jones because his music sense is different from ordinary ones. |

Starting number is "The Little Pixie" composed by Thad. I am fascinated with strange sound at the opening. Chasing of drums by Mel Lewis and horn section are excellent. Combination of Smooth piano solo, sax solo and horn chasing is great. Each solo part of clarinet, baritone sax, bass are gradually heated up. Mysterious tune of clarinet is leading effectively to bass solo part. Then, it is heated down and go back to the starting phrase. Lively and swingy music are marvelous. I wanted to see Thad conducting . I was moved by the first number . "A-That's Freedom " is stomp blues with medium- tempo. Piano performance is fantastic. The rhythm by trombone makes it enjoyable music. Drums by Mel is effective in "Bachafillen" in addition to piano performance , rhythm section and excellent solo performance. "Samba Con Getchu" is rhythmic Latin music. Mel's drum , Sam's shaker and shout by other members are fading out but they increase intensity again and end their performance silently. "Quietude" is performed elegantly with swingy piano solo by Roland Hanna. Audience voice and had clap make live atmosphere in "Don't Git Sassy" during pleasure mute performance. You will be fascinated with excellent piano performance by Roland Hanna in "The Second Race". Fantastic sax performance is made in last number "Lover Man" . This is a great live CD performed by brilliant soloists and Thad Jones playing wind instruments. |
