CD recommended by Mr. KondoSonny Rollins/WITHOUT A SONG THE 9/11 CONCERT Sonny Rollins(ts, Clifton Anderson(tb), Stephen Scott(p), Bob Cranshaw(el,b) Perry Wilson(ds), Kimati Dinizulu(per) Recorded on September 15,2001 in Boston Victor Entertainment VICJ-61283 Released 2005/8/24 I heard that a majestic Tenor Saxophonist, Sonny Rollins would retire after Japan tour . It is said that the death of his beloved wife, Lusille made him decide to retire . Also, it is true that he is too old to make live tours in far country like Japan. His resolution to retire from music performance seems firm. Jazz magazines reveal that Last concert of Sonny Rollins, " LIVE IN JAPAN 2005" will be held five times from October 31 to November 8. It is sorry to hear about his retirement but it is great news for Jazz fans that he will make Japan Tour. This must be the last chance for us to listen to his live performance. His masterpiece of Jazz, "Saxophone Colossus" was released in 1956 and his passionate play of "One & Only" fascinated all listeners. He still makes further development in his musicianship even though 50 years have passed since his debut. |

"Without a Song(The 9/11 Concert)" is a new album after he released "This is what I Do" (VICJ-60709) five years ago. As the title of this live album suggested it was recorded in Boston four days after the terrorist's attack on 9/11,2001 in NY and 20 years had passed since his first live recording. Such long interval made him a passionate performance. His last album "Without a Song(The 9/11 Concert)" revealed me his vitality and furthering improvement as artist. His sound delivered by trial and error gets more complicated, however, it is still gentle , warm and moving. His performance is admired as universal music beyond the genre of Jazz. Sonny Rollins is regarded as a real Jazz Giant . He will make performance of "St. Thomas" for Japanese fans on his last tour in Japan. |
Clark Terry & Max Roach/FreiendshipClark Terry(tp flg), Max Roach(ds), Don Friedman(p), Marcus McLaurine(b) Recorded 2002//10 NY Clark Terry was 81 years old(82 years old in December) and Max Roach was 78 years when this album was recorded. I thought that Don Friedman(67 years old) was a nice old man at the concert "100 Gold Fingers". Terry and Roach are rather old than Friedman. Anyway, forget about ages in listening to this album. Max Roach is well- known for Combo album with his friend, Clifford Brown who has passed away. "I Remember Clifford" is an immortal work dedicated to Clifford Brown ho died in his prime. Max Roach could not play drums just before recording this album, so it is recorded without drums. Beautiful and tearful melody written by Benny Golson is fascinating. I recommend you to listen to this album with such anecdote. |

"Statements" is improvised by Terry and Roach and they make powerful performance. "Let's Cool One" is swingy and warm. make "Brushes and Brass" written by Terry is pleasant duo with Terry's mute and Roach's brush work. Precise drumming touch and folk sound is excellent on "Lil Max" improvised by Roach. Is he really 78 years old? "But Beautiful" is a famous love song with sweet performance by Terry(flg.tp). Clear piano sound of Freedman is great. "Makin' Whoopee" has comfortable melody. Terry plays flugelhorn and trumpet in his both hands on "To Basie With Love". "The Neamess Of You" is solo performance by Terry. |
CD recommended by Ms. Trumpeter (guest of the week)Tommy Flanagan/Vangurd Village Life Tommy Flanagan (p),Lewis Nash(ds),Peter Washington(b) I was fascinated with accurate and sensitive performance by Flanagan on " Saxophone Collossus" which is historical jazz album. He made an essential role to produce most of famous jazz album and I am surprised to see the excellent members who he played with. His name enables to search to find famous discs. Liner notes tells that he is regarded as only mior player behind big stars and he has a unfavorable review. Japan has a lot of his fans and he made Japan tour in 2000 before he died one in 2001. This album was recorded in his 67 years birthday concert at NY Villlage Vangurd after 40 years of "Saxophone Collossus". He got the best members like Lewis Nash and Peter Washington(7 years since establishment) and he has improved his original style. All performance on his stage in front of audience is recorded in this album. |

His matured performance is very attractive. Audience are fascinated with suspense and romance which his career delivers. Shadowing blow by Nash is harmonized excellently. Washington makes unique performance. More and more I listens to this album, deeper and deeper I am moved by their performance. This album can satisfy any listeners. No.2'With Malice toward None' is swingy number with the image that young man becomes positive with encourage and hope after facing failure. No.5'Tin Tin Deo' is smoky and elegant Latin number which provides their flexibility in their Jazz performance. No.6'Sunset And The Mockingbird' is Ellington's number with impressive introduction. Personally I like this number. No.7 is a medley by Tom Macintosh. Slow ballade of piano leads passionate band performance. Thrilling development makes the listeners excited. I am moved by the present from audience to Flanagan at the last of concert. |
