CD recommended by Mr. KondoLady Kim/Everything Must Change Lady Kim(vo), Manabu Ohishi(p,org, pianica), Benisuke Sakai(b), Tommy Campbell(ds), Shinpei Inoue(fl), Hidefumi Toki(as) Lady Kim's second album "Everything Must Change" is selected "The Seventh Gold Disk" by Swing Journal magazine. Her debut album " Left Alone" was released July 2004 and she was called a second Billy Holiday. Her first album selected cool standard numbers with piano trio. She sings with slightly husky voice in her second album and her style is really fascinating. |

This album includes a large repertoire of songs from orthodox jazz number like "I Love You Porgy"(#3) "How High The Moon"(#4) "The Nearmess of You" (#7) to Chicago Blues and Pops. Her great ability is shown in this album besides being called a second Billy Holiday, She is developing her talent and her originality makes this album excellent. Simple recording reproduces natural sound of vocal and other instruments in detalis. Manabu Ohishi's makes various performance of piano, organ, Hammond B3 and Pianica and his performance greatly contributes to this album. "Tell Me More and More" (#5) is overwhelming. Is it too early to look forward to her third album? She is a promising singer and I expect her future. |
CD recommended by Ms. CappuccinoAnita O'day/ Anita Sings The Most with the Oscar Peterson Quartet Anita O'day(vo), Oscar Peterson(p), Her Ellis(g), Ray Brown(b), John Poole(ds) Recorded in January 31, 1957 at Universal Studio in Chicago It is sometimes said that Anita is the best white female jazz singer. She joined Gene Krupa Band as band singer. Then, she moved Stan Kenton's band. Later she struck out on her own. I am a beginner of Jazz and the words "Female Jazz Singer" reminds me of "Billy Holiday" " Sarah Vaughan""Ella Fitzerald". who are exceptional. Also I imagine Peggy Lee, Heren Meril and Anita O'day. Anita tends to sing monotonously because of narrow voice range but she covers it by swing technique and healthy image. Her way of singing is attractive because she looks like gargling. |

This album has a lot of standard numbers. Up-tempo songs like "S'wonderful"/"The Can't Take That Away From Me","Them There Eyes" with different tunes are well blended. Anita's scat and quartet have great chemistry and it is fantastic. Her vocal and harmonized Oscar Peterson trio make swingy performance. "Tenderly","Love Me Or Leave Me","We'll Be Together Again","Stella By Starlight","Taking A Chance On Love" with "I've Got The World On A String" is performed by guitar. Qualtet accompany is excellent. "You Turned the Tables On Me","Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered" is played like storytelling. If you are a fan of jazz vocal or piano , it is good chance to get this album. |
