Hello, I am Tokushige at Nihonbashi Store. This week I report on a Diatone speaker first in a long period.
The speaker was first produced in 1980 named DS-505. It employs the D.U.D. (Diatone Unified Diaphragm), a method to directly drive the diaphragm with a structure unifying voice coils and the diaphragm, which became typical later on for Diatone speakers. It is a four-way speaker of a large-sized bookshelf type that is equipped with a closed-type enclosure of 420 (W) x 720 (H) x 425mm (D), a 32cm woofer, 16cm mid-bass, 4cm mid-high and 2.3cm tweeter. It weighs 42kg and manages to be carried by only one person.
The frequency response ranges from 28 to 40,000Hz and crossover at each unit is 350, 1,500 and 5,000Hz respectively. Since the enclosure is large for a bookshelf type, you can enjoy fairly great sound field. Of course, it has high resolution in mid and high range. However, I feel the sound integrity might be better on a three-way speaker than this. Starting with this model, three-way DS-503 in 1981, DS-3000 in 1984 which is a successor to DS-505, DS-1000 series and DS-2000 series were unveiled afterwards respectively. In a sense, the DS-505 is a Diatone speaker in early days. But even now, 25 years after its release, it lets you enjoy completely fresh sound it reproduces.
