Report from me, Sone, who loves jazz piano I wish I could play the jazz piano. Impossible. Could I play any as such? Then I started to play― |
The tenor sax. It requires the same fingering as the one for a recorder which I played in my elementary school days. This is what I can play! I was too optimistic, I think by now. Then, the reason why I chose the tenor sax was― |

Mr. Johnny Griffin himself. I was fascinated by his speedy, comfortable sound. |
What I bought was a SELMER Reference36 tenor sax. This is a reproduced model of the 1936 original with balance action. At first, I played a tenor sax of YANAGISAWA, the only Japanese maker specialized in saxophones. But later on, a used SELMER saxophone was offered to me, and I loved its thick sound and the way of its sound coming out en masse. So I purchased it. |

Of course, I could not play the sax at first as a beginner and there was no place to play. Therefore, I started to take regular lessons at a school. I have been learning the basic method there, while I have changed my rubber mouthpiece to a metallic one. With the metallic mouthpiece, my sax sound has become clearer and smoother while it has become a little more difficult for me to play the sax. |
This mouthpiece is difficult to use because the tone changes depending on how deeply it is inserted. (I marked the mouthpiece with a pencil!) |

However, the most interesting is the reed. To my surprise, only this one reed can change the tone of the sax dramatically. I usually use a soft reed. But when I dared to use a harder reed, I was able to play the sax as much as possible though it was a little hard to respire while playing. I hope I will become an advanced sax player before long who may be in a dilemma as to which reed to choose. |
Besides, when I went to a used musical instruments shop to sell my old YANAGISAWA tenor sax, I came across a flight case. An authentic black case looks stylish, but now I use this flight case because of its convenience. It is light and convenient to carry around. Will my technique be improved? I am worried but simultaneously looking forward to my improvement. When I become an advanced player, I will report to you again. Before that, however, I am afraid my boss will get angry with me saying, "Do your work!" Since I have a chance to listen to acoustic sound, I am planning to review my audio set. |
