I studied various tones of Bubinga board and replaced speaker units. Bass sound seemed weak so I installed L shape board with 20cm width to it. I could not find Bubinga board and I used quince board(20mm in thickness).
It was reinforced with three triangle-shaped wood block and I checked the sound. I was satisfied with the bass range. I tried to change several kinds of baffle boards and speaker units. I installed speaker unit which I bought Akihabara at JPY2,000 and compared the sound to ALTEC 409. There were no large difference as far as the baffle board was large and hard. If you make speaker by yourself, I recommend you choosing large, hard and heavy board as much as possible. It does not matter that the material is natural wood or plywood. Why don't you try it.
