Information from Shop Manager 1.IPPIN GUIDE - "JBL SG-520" JBL-SG-520 was a real vintage audio amplifier which had released 37 years ago. I longed SG-520 with its shopisticated design and sound quality and often dropped by the audio shop to see it. I have never seen such amplifier with outstanding design. which had sliding volume insteda of tuning one. I was attracted by the unique design and often visited audio shop to listen to the music with SG-520 and JBL 4310 speaker. It was said that SG-520's excellent sound moved many audio criticizers. However, there was a nerve in SG-520. SG-520 had so complex wiring that it was difficult to make maintenance. Whole component should be required to disassmble to replace sliding switch. Especailly the wiring around push-light switch was so complicated that the service was not sufficient. Sansui was the representative of JBL at that time and SG-520 bothered their service engineers. Arnold Wolf was the designer of SG-520 and it ensured his fame. The circuit was combined germanium and silicon transisiter, not direct circuit in present model. The excellent sound of SG-520 is still vivid in my memory. Comment and photographs of JBL SG-520 are available below: http://www.hifido.co.jp/merumaga/ippin/041008/indexe.html 2. CD Picks of the week - July 1984 Mr. Kondo recommends "Take the A Train" by MJQ. The first album of MJQ was recorded July 1984 and there was a fusion album made by the same producer, David Matthews and the drums, Steve Gadd in one week after the next day of recording. Ms. Cappuccino recommends "GADD ABOUT" which is his only one leader's album. http://www.hifido.co.jp/merumaga/koncappu/041015/indexe.html Each CD will be presented for our readers. My Audio and Jazz History by Kenji Kondo Some readers are interested in Mr. Kondo and Ms. Cappuccino."My Audio and Jazz History" will reveal Mr. Kondo gradually . http://www.hifido.co.jp/merumaga/special/041008/indexe.html 4. Walking aroung Akihabara by Taro Akiba As soon as I listened to its sound ,I noticed a subtle difference between this speaker and other speakers which I had ever tried . The bass sound was so celar. It seemed like the better bass of APOGGI with genuine sound from low to high range. It sounded as live performance. I have ever tried many speakers , however, all of them are box type. Audio image was completely changed once I heared the sound with baffle. I asked my friend about it. He replied, "Audio manufacturer has already noticed that the baffle is much better but the baffle is unfit for speaker cosmetically and it is not profitable. I can notice the baffle enables to reproduce more natural sound and I can not understand the reason why the audio manufacturers do not use the baffle only because it is not profittable. The owner of Hi-Fi Do adivised me to make original speaker by myself. I have ever replaced speakers so many times but no one has told me about baffle. I tried to make different type, however, there were no differences. I don't want to try box type anymore once I have heard the sound with baffle. It might be my own opinion. To be continued 5.
