Jazz Live Report by Ms. Cappuccino " Over Seas" February 19, 2005 I have not watched Live concert for a long time. This time I went to Jazz Club "Over Seas" in Osaka. I was bad at direction but this is the first time for me to reach the live house without losing my way. I found the sign of "Over Seas" at the first alley. I climbed the stairs and there was a double window. Unfortunately, it was rain , however, there were many audience waiting for live concert. |

It was dinner time, but it was acceptable to order drink only. I exchanged greetings to the wife of Mr. Hisayuki Terai,Jazz Pianist. She was friendly lady who had consideration for others. They accepted to take photographs and interview. Mr.Mimura, who is the owener of Jazz Shop "Mimura" , said to me " Mr. Terai will get angry if you don' t listen to the live concert seriously." or " Mr. Terai has a stern face." I usually did not mind such comment but this time I am feeling different atmosphere |

I found a small microphone on the table and they stand-by to record the live concert when I looked over the club. People wrote down something when Mr. Terai introduced their numbers. They listened to their live very seriously. I found they were the pupils of his paino class. He allows them to record their live. According to him, he always teach them as much as he can . Recently his pupil will make stage debut. I asked , "Is he strict?" "No, he is shy." she said. |

The people who wanted to be a Jazz Musician learned how to play jazz music by listening to CDs of their favorite Jazz musicians. Fortunately, Mr. Terai learned not only piano technique, but also his human nature from Tommy Flanagan through daily life four years ago and established deep relationship with him. It is so- called the world of craftsmanship and only the people who had strict training can get skill and mind. Live is composed of three parts. I made an interview with Mr.Terai at the interval. He is only one pupil of Tommy Flanagan in the world. He started to play piano at 4. He is now suffering inflammation of a tendon and he has sore arm, shoulder , and hips. However, he said he was interested in only piano and he continues to play it even taping his palm. What drive him to play it ? He might think his mission is to succeed Detroit Hard Bap Jazz. |
|
I can feel the tension on the stage by Mr. Munetake(b), Mr. Kawahara(ds). Mr.Terai said he made tension deliberately. However, this trio has played together over 20 years. They have telepathy each other. They will play as much as possible on every stage. |
|
I quote one part of Mr. Terai's essay – "Professional pianists must have technique. They are required to make expression of warmth, coldness , red , sweet, bitter through thier piano tune . The real professional pianist can express the tone of scent in addition to them. There are style and many things to learn and I learned and succeeded all of them from my master." |

He seems strict to himself. He feels very happy when audience is impressed with his live. I can really understand what he said because I love live concerts. His piano tune is so beautiful .There are so many sounds and they create swingy and nostalgic atmosphere. His piano makes me imagine the scene that the drop of water were running down on the wet leaves after the rain. It is interesting for me to know that there is large gap between his appearance and his gentle piano sound. |

His wife was wonderful lady to keep the atmosphere of hospitality for their club and she supported pianist husband behind his back. We will offer special CD present with their signature by draw.
