Kaitai Shinsho, vol.18, Chapter: Utopia/Jensen Theater King Description by Kenji Kondo, Otomeijin and Hiroyuki Satake, Photography by Hiroyuki Satake 3WAY JENSEN unit - Utopia enclosure |
This is a theater king system where the Jensen unit is installed in the Utopia enclosure. It has two woofers with two horns. (Satake) Jensen seems to have started as a professional-use speaker unit manufacturer even though they have a bit different trend from ALTEC. (Kondo) |
This is around the horn on top. It seems to handle the mid and high range. The transformer is put in here to create the network. (Satake) The network box is made with the coil and the condenser the same way as it is now. I'm not sure why there is a cavity on top of the mediant horn. I wonder if they made so to ensure to make it look big. (Otomeijin) |
The driver and the horn are fixed with a metal board so that they can float inside. Cables of the driver are put out directly. (Satake) |
It looks like this from the back. The screw has been stuck in the middle of the driver. The front side is hanging by two points from top and the back side is being fixed by one point below. (Satake) |
This is a high-range horn. It is buried in the enclosure. This is tiny though, it is a sectoral horn. (Satake) |
This is the view from the back. The horn is attached only to a baffle board for the fixation. This horn is attached to the same board as the baffle board of the woofer. It looks almost the same as the mid and high range driver though, the model number is different. (Satake) |
This is a woofer. The condition is good. It is fixed with the baffle board from the back. (Satake) Mr. Satake, can you read the model number of the speaker? According to the master Takajo's "Cyclopedia of LP Techniques " (by Shigemi Takajo, published in June 1954), the combination of Jensen should be P15-LL (woofer), RP-201 (mediant) and RP-302 (super tweeter). It never so old.(Otomeijin) |
That is the back. The design is pretty rugged. Two woofers are P15LF the same model number for each. The driver is RP201, and the tweeter is R-103. (Satake) |
This is the overall view. It is pretty heavy since it has three units on. The baffle board itself isn't that heavy. Removing is quite easy since there is a handle on the surface of the baffle. (Satake) |
This is a transformer the number 1 in the network part. (Satake) |
Jensen A-402(Satake) According to "Cyclopedia of LP Techniques", A-402 is 4000Hz turnover network. (Otomeijin) |
A transformer the number 2 (Satake) |
This transformer is Jensen A-61. (Satake) According to "Cyclopedia of LP Techniques", A-61 should be 600HZ. It was a new design product at that time (half a century ago). It will be 4000Hz 4-speaker 3-way with the crossover frequency of 600Hz in today's fashion. (Otomeijin) |
The cable going to 2 horns seems to pass the attenuator after passing the transformer. (Satake) |
This is the attenuator. (Satake) |
This is a back loading horn type speaker for the corner installation as well as Autograph. (Otomeijin) The inside box looks like this. The reason why it shapes like a distorted trapezoid is that the rooms for the low range passage are made on both sides. (Satake) |
This theater king system is made to be available for the multiple specification as well. Since it is not the multiple specification now, there are two extra cables left. (Satake) |
This is the connector. There are three connectors. (Satake) |
There are cracks on either side in the part where the woofer is in, the room under the enclosure. And these cracks are made for turning the low range to the rear. (Satake) |
It gets out to the rear side from both sides going from the cracks in the above picture through the space on the enclosure side. (Satake) |
This is a zoomed view of the lattice. It takes a lot of time and efforts to make like this. |
You can see the logo of "Jensen" under the lattice. (Satake) |
However, when you see the back, you will find a sticker of "Utopish Utopia". (Satake) |
Theater king is a bigger-than-life speaker unlike A7 for its name. It is being sold on the Utopia web site for home theater use. Although this is available as a package deal with the Altec unit and a high-definition liquid crystal TV, I was impressed by the idea of combining the home theater with this kind of speaker. This pair of speaker seems more interesting than being surrounded by tiny satellite speakers. (Satake) I actually used to use Jensen G610B over 20 years ago by installing it in the big speaker system which my audiophile friends made by themselves. It was impressive to hear the radical low range feel and the snappy sound. I want to hear it once again by installing G610B in this gorgeous box of Utopia. The concert hall sound that I cannot hear elsewhere will come back to life again. (Kondo) Utopia seems not to mass-produce speaker boxes but to make classic, artistic and sophisticated boxes of speaker system like this speaker and Autograph. It is not my kind of speaker since I usually make things on my own though, it is good to know that they make speakers that my audiophile friends want to own someday. (Otomeijin) |
